A Custom Walnut Four Poster Bed, Built to Be Handed Down

A client came to the shop with a photograph of an antique bed. He did not want a reproduction, and he did not want the laminates and veneers that most modern furniture is built from. He wanted a bed made from solid black walnut, one he could enjoy now and hand down to his family later. That piece, a custom walnut four poster bed, became one of my favorite things I have ever built.

Solid black walnut, not laminate

The brief was simple and it was the right one. Build it out of solid hardwood, the way beds were made before furniture became disposable. We used black walnut throughout, chosen board by board for grain and color.

A bed like this is not meant to be replaced in ten years. It is meant to outlast the room it sits in and become the piece a family keeps. That is the whole reason to build in solid walnut instead of a veneered box. The wood earns its keep over generations, not seasons.

A four poster shaped by the grain

The design is a classical one. Four turned posts, each cut in a repeating pattern of coves, beads, and fillets that taper as they climb. What makes this bed different is the walnut itself, and how we chose to use the sapwood.

Black walnut has a dark heartwood and a much lighter sapwood at the edge of the board. Most woodworkers cut the sapwood off and throw it away. I wanted to build the design around it instead, letting the light and dark work as a contrast that carries the eye across the piece.

For the headboard, I combed through the boards and planed them down until the sapwood ran in a gentle curve across the panel. It draws the eye and gives the bed a focal point. For the posts, the harder part was joining four boards together for each leg so that when the wood went on the lathe, the sapwood was revealed in a way that added to the turning instead of fighting it. Every post tells you where the tree grew.

Joinery that lasts, and comes apart when it needs to

As in every bed we make, we used the strongest and quietest joinery we know. The rails are joined to the posts with mortise and tenon, drawn tight with bed bolts so the whole frame can be broken down and moved with nothing but a bed bolt wrench. We cover the bolt heads with custom brass covers we designed for the piece.

The finish is built up in layers. A custom dye stain first, to bring out the depth of the kiln dried walnut, then a custom blend of shellac to protect the wood and let the grain keep its life. Nothing about it is sprayed on and forgotten. It is meant to age well and be cared for.
