Custom kitchen cabinets in an Athens, GA home by Reviving Dawn

An Athens Cabinet Maker, Not a Cabinet Maker Who Serves Athens

I'm Kyle Oliver, the founder and head craftsman behind Reviving Dawn. I've lived in Five Points for eight years, a few blocks from Memorial Park, and the shop is in Watkinsville, fifteen minutes south. So when I take on an Athens cabinetry project, I'm not driving in from somewhere else. I'm building cabinets for my neighbors.

That matters in ways that show up during a job. Site visits happen the same day. If the install reveals something unexpected, I'm back the next morning. The shop is close enough that templates and trim can move between site and shop without burning days of travel.

It also matters in ways that show up in the design. Athens homes have particular characteristics depending on where they are. Five Points bungalows and Normaltown cottages have plaster walls, weird ceiling heights, and original trim that needs to be respected. Boulevard homes often have rooms that were never quite square and woodwork from an era that no factory can replicate. Newer Athens construction has its own problems: ceiling heights that fall awkwardly between the standard 36" and 42" upper-cabinet options, openings that weren't framed for an island, walls that aren't where the drawings said they'd be.

Factory cabinets can't address any of this. They get shimmed and caulked into place, or they leave gaps where the design wanted continuity. Custom cabinetry, built the way furniture is built (measured in place, cut to fit, hardwood faces, dovetailed drawers, mortise-and-tenon face frames), addresses all of it. That approach costs more than buying boxes from a catalog. The result is cabinetry that belongs in your home and lasts longer than the home does.

What We Build for Athens Homeowners

Kitchen Cabinetry

Full kitchen designs from the island to the appliance garages. We work with homeowners directly and with the designer on your project. Hardwood species selected with you, finishes hand-applied, hardware spec'd to match the rest of the home.

Vanities & Bathroom Cabinetry

Furniture-style vanities for primary baths and powder rooms: single and double sink configurations, freestanding pieces that read more like an antique chest than a builder-grade box. Common in Five Points and Boulevard renovations.

Built-Ins

Library walls, window seats, mudroom storage, banquettes, family-room media cabinets. Built-ins are where furniture-grade construction matters most. These pieces are loaded daily and live in the room with you forever.

Wet Bars & Beverage Storage

A growing category for Athens entertaining spaces: integrated refrigeration, glass storage, lit display, hidden trash and ice. Designed to function and engineered to last.

Commercial Millwork

We design and build commercial cabinetry and architectural millwork for Athens businesses, and our commercial work runs the same construction standard as our residential cabinetry, just with different timeline and budget conversations.

Featured Athens Project: Nabo Realty Office, with DesignPsych Interiors

One of our defining Athens projects was the buildout for Nabo Realty's office, designed in collaboration with DesignPsych Interiors. The brief: a workspace that read warm, tactile, and unmistakably custom, not corporate, not generic.

We built it almost entirely in oak, using tambour as the unifying material language throughout:

  • Tambour wall paneling treating the walls themselves as a design element rather than a backdrop
  • Tambour-front conference tables anchoring the meeting spaces
  • A tambour-faced custom desk as the centerpiece of the workspace
  • A built-in banquette with tambour sides integrating seating into the architectural envelope

Tambour is exacting work. The slats have to be milled to consistent thickness, glued to a flexible backing without telegraphing, and finished so the grain reads as one continuous surface across curves and corners. The project gave the office a coherent material identity that photographs as well as it functions, and it's the kind of work that's only possible when designer and builder are on the same page from day one.

Working with Athens Designers & Builders

Most of our Athens work comes through a mix of client referrals and partnerships with a handful of local interior designers. The Nabo Realty project with DesignPsych Interiors is one of those collaborations, and the kind of relationship we'd like to build more of with the Athens design community.

Designers and builders working in Athens-Clarke County: we'd genuinely like to talk. Custom cabinetry can make or break a room, and the difference between a good kitchen and a great one usually shows up at the cabinetry level. We're easy to work with because we understand how the trade operates: drawings reviewed promptly, specifications honored to the dimension, schedules respected, communication clear when something on site changes.

A Word from an Athens Client

"I've worked with a few cabinet makers over the years, but none came close to the quality I got from Reviving Dawn. I wanted true furniture-style cabinets with solid wood drawers and doors, and most places said it wasn't possible. Kyle made it happen, and the results are incredible. The craftsmanship, the grain selection, and the way everything fits together show real skill and care. These aren't factory cabinets. They're built to last and look even better with time."

Athens Custom Cabinetry: Common Questions

How much do custom cabinets cost in Athens, GA?

Custom cabinetry is priced by the project, not off a price list. As a frame of reference, a furniture-grade kitchen in the Athens area generally runs between forty thousand and a hundred and twenty thousand dollars depending on the size of the room, the wood species, and the level of detail. Vanities, built-ins, and bar areas come in lower. We wrote an honest breakdown of what custom cabinets cost in Georgia if you want the full picture before you reach out.

Do you build cabinetry for historic Athens homes?

Yes, and it is some of our favorite work. The bungalows around Cobbham and Boulevard and the cottages in Five Points and Normaltown were not built to a catalog's standard dimensions, and their walls have moved over the decades. We scribe every cabinet to the wall it meets and fit it to the room's real corners, so the finished work looks like it belongs in the house rather than dropped into it.

How long does a custom cabinet project take?

Most full custom kitchens run eight to sixteen weeks from approved design to completed installation, with smaller projects moving faster. The timeline depends on scope, materials, and finishes. Here is a stage-by-stage look at how long a custom cabinet project takes.

Do you work with Athens designers and builders?

We do, on both residential and commercial projects. We honor drawings and specifications to the dimension, keep communication clear when something on site changes, and hold to the schedule we set. Being twenty minutes from Athens means we can be on your site the same day.

Where is your shop, and do you serve all of Athens?

Our shop is in Watkinsville, about twenty minutes south of downtown Athens. We build for homes throughout Athens-Clarke County, including Five Points, Normaltown, Cobbham, and Boulevard, and across the surrounding area. Call (678) 617-2647 or tell us about your project to start a conversation.
