The Prince is a four-poster bed built entirely from solid American black walnut, and it starts long before the first cut. I go through the lumber board by board, choosing each one for its grain and figure, then lay them out so the pattern flows the way I want it across the posts, the headboard, and the rails. That selection is the part most people never see, and it is the part that makes each bed its own. No two are ever alike.
The posts are turned by hand on the lathe. The joinery is old-world mortise and tenon, the strongest and longest-lasting joint there is, with brass bed bolt covers for a quiet bit of elegance. Solid wood slats let the mattress breathe. Every surface is worked and finished by hand, so the walnut, not the hardware, is what you notice.
This is the kind of piece I built my shop to make. It is meant to move with the seasons, to be handed down, and to still be sound generations from now. Furniture-quality work, made one at a time, by one set of hands.
