How Long Does a Custom Cabinet Project Take? A Realistic Timeline
Share
The most common question after "what does it cost" is "how long will it take." Here's a realistic, stage-by-stage timeline for a custom cabinetry project.
The short answer
Most full custom kitchens run 8 to 16 weeks from approved design to completed installation. Smaller projects like a vanity, a set of built-ins, or a bar are quicker. The range is wide because "custom" means built for your home, and a few factors (scope, materials, finishes, site readiness) move the number. Here's where the time actually goes.
Stage 1: Consultation and design
We start with a conversation about the space, how you use it, your style, and your budget, then take measurements. From there we develop a design. This stage moves at the speed of decisions. The faster we settle the layout and look together, the faster everything downstream goes.
Stage 2: Renderings and approval
Before we cut a single board, you see the work in detailed drawings and 3D renderings and approve the design, materials, and hardware. Getting this right on paper is what prevents surprises and delays later, which is why we don't skip it.
Stage 3: In the shop
Once the design is approved and materials are in hand, the build happens in our Watkinsville shop. This is the bulk of the timeline: milling, joinery, assembly. Hardwood that needs to acclimate and finishes that need curing time can't be rushed without costing you quality down the road.
Stage 4: Finishing
Hand-applied finishes are built up in coats, each needing time to cure. A multi-step painted or stained finish adds days here, and it's a big part of why furniture-grade cabinetry looks and lasts the way it does.
Stage 5: Installation
We install on-site, scribed and fitted to the room, on the day we scheduled. A typical kitchen install is a few days; larger projects run longer. Because we built it to the room's real dimensions, it goes in clean.
What changes the timeline
Bigger scope, premium finishes, custom hardware lead times, and site readiness all shift the schedule. We flag anything that affects timing up front, give you a real date, and hold to it.
